Trance and possession in Bali: A window on western multiple personality, possession disorder, and suicide
Trance and Possession in Bali: A Window on Western Multiple Personality, Possession Disorder, and Suicide examines trance and possession practices in Balinese culture as socially and religiously embedded phenomena, and compares them with Western psychiatric concepts such as multiple personality disorder, possession disorder, and suicide. Using a cross-cultural perspective, the book argues that trance in Bali is not necessarily seen as mental illness, but as a culturally accepted way of expressing and managing psychological stress and social conflict, thereby challenging Western medical models that tend to individualize and pathologize such experiences.
