Female Genital Mutilation in Malta: A Research Study
Female Genital Mutilation in Malta: A Research Study presents a comprehensive examination of the presence, risks, and implications of FGM within Malta, particularly in relation to migrant and asylum-seeking communities originating from countries where the practice is prevalent. Using qualitative methods—including stakeholder interviews and literature review—the study assesses Malta’s legal framework, health-care preparedness, child-protection mechanisms, and institutional responses to FGM. Findings highlight limited awareness, the absence of standardized clinical guidelines, gaps in reporting and data collection, and the need for stronger prevention, community engagement, and coordinated inter-agency action. The report concludes with key recommendations aimed at strengthening legislation, enhancing professional training, improving protection systems, and developing evidence-based policies to effectively prevent and address FGM in Malta.
