Sexual and bodily rights as human rights in the Middle East and North Africa a workshop report: Women for women's human rights (wwhr) - new ways & mediterranean academy of diplomatic studies may 29-june 1, 2003, Malta
Sexual and Bodily Rights as Human Rights in the Middle East and North Africa: A Workshop Report documents the key discussions and outcomes of a regional workshop organized by Women for Women’s Human Rights (WWHR) – New Ways and the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies, held in Malta from May 29 to June 1, 2003. The report highlights the urgent need to recognize sexual and bodily autonomy as integral components of human rights in the MENA region, where legal, cultural, and political constraints continue to limit women’s freedoms. Through expert presentations, advocacy strategies, and cross-country exchanges, the workshop examined issues such as gender-based violence, discriminatory laws, sexual health rights, and the role of civil society in advancing reform. The report underscores the importance of regional collaboration, capacity-building, and rights-based approaches to strengthen women’s agency and promote transformative change across diverse MENA contexts.
