Pornography: Women, violence and civil liberties
This work critically examines the complex intersections between pornography, gender-based violence, and civil liberties. It explores how pornography shapes cultural norms surrounding women’s bodies, consent, and sexuality, arguing that many forms of commercial sexual imagery reinforce misogyny and contribute to environments where violence against women is normalized. At the same time, the text evaluates debates on freedom of expression, questioning how civil liberties frameworks can balance protection from harm with rights to speech and representation. Through feminist legal analysis, empirical research, and case studies, the book outlines competing perspectives within anti-pornography and pro-free-speech movements. Ultimately, it highlights the challenges of regulating pornography in ways that safeguard women’s dignity and safety without undermining fundamental democratic freedoms.
