Back to Situbondo? Nahdlatul Ulama attitudes towards Abdurrahman Wahid's presidency and his fall
Back to Situbondo? Nahdlatul Ulama Attitudes Towards Abdurrahman Wahid’s Presidency and His Fall examines the complex relationship between Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), and the presidency of Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur). The book explores how NU’s ideological foundations, organizational dynamics, and internal politics shaped its responses to Gus Dur’s leadership and eventual removal from office. Through political and sociological analysis, it reveals the tensions between religious loyalty, democratic governance, and pragmatic political interests within NU. Ultimately, the work highlights how Gus Dur’s presidency tested the boundaries of Islamic leadership, reform, and pluralism in post-Suharto Indonesia.
