Protocols additional to the Geneva conventions of 12 August 1949
The Additional Protocols to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949 expand and strengthen the protections of international humanitarian law in armed conflicts. Adopted in 1977, Protocol I addresses international armed conflicts, enhancing safeguards for civilians and combatants, while Protocol II covers non-international armed conflicts, establishing rules for the humane treatment of persons not taking part in hostilities. A later Protocol III (2005) introduced the Red Crystal as an additional emblem alongside the Red Cross and Red Crescent. Together, these instruments build upon the Geneva Conventions by clarifying obligations, prohibiting indiscriminate attacks, and reinforcing the principle of distinction between civilians and combatants. The Additional Protocols remain vital for adapting humanitarian law to the realities of modern warfare.
