European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights
The European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) is a funding instrument established by the European Union to promote democracy, the rule of law, and the protection of human rights worldwide. Unlike other EU aid mechanisms, the EIDHR works independently of national governments, allowing it to directly support civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and democratic actors, even in politically sensitive environments. Its focus areas include combating torture, supporting free and fair elections, strengthening civil society, advancing gender equality, and protecting vulnerable groups. By providing financial and political support, the EIDHR seeks to empower local initiatives and reinforce international human rights standards, contributing to sustainable democratic governance and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
