MAKING LOCAL BUDGET GENDER RESPONSIVE: INDONESIA'S STORIES-Promoting good and gender responsive governance through budget initiatives in Parepare
This book documents the initiative to promote gender-responsive governance in Parepare, South Sulawesi, by integrating gender perspectives into local budget processes. It highlights how collaboration between women’s groups, civil society, and local government helped shape budget priorities that respond to the specific needs of women and marginalized communities.
The experience in Parepare shows achievements such as the adoption of gender budget statements, enhanced participation of women in planning forums, and increased awareness of gender equity among policymakers. At the same time, it identifies challenges including limited technical skills, political constraints, and the need for stronger institutional frameworks. The case demonstrates that gender-responsive budgeting is not only about fair resource distribution but also about deepening democracy and promoting accountable local governance.
