Making budget relevant : empowering women at the grass-root level in Polewali Mandar District( Making Local Budget Gender Responsive Indonesia's Stories)
Making Budget Relevant presents the experience of integrating gender perspectives into local budgeting in Polewali Mandar District, Indonesia. The initiative focused on empowering women at the grassroots level by enabling them to participate in planning and decision-making processes that shape budget allocations.
The book illustrates how women’s groups, civil society organizations, and local government collaborated to identify community priorities, advocate for gender-responsive programs, and ensure that public spending addressed the real needs of both women and men. It highlights successes in strengthening women’s agency and improving service delivery, while also acknowledging challenges such as limited technical capacity and institutional resistance. This case demonstrates that gender-responsive budgeting can become a powerful tool for inclusive and equitable development at the local level.
