Girls, feminism, and grassroots literacies-Activism in the GirlZone
Girls, Feminism, and Grassroots Literacies: Activism in the GirlZone examines how a feminist, community-based literacy project in Chicago—known as GirlZone—created spaces for young women to engage in writing, art, and activism. The book documents how girls used grassroots literacies to challenge dominant cultural narratives, express their identities, and build collective power.
Through ethnographic research and critical feminist analysis, Sheridan-Rabideau highlights the complexities of empowerment, collaboration, and agency among girls involved in the project. The work demonstrates how feminist pedagogy and community literacy practices can foster social change while also revealing tensions between institutional structures, local activism, and young women’s voices.
