Feminist theory and international relations in a postmodern era
Feminist Theory and International Relations in a Postmodern Era challenges the conventional boundaries of international relations (IR) theory by integrating feminist perspectives and postmodern critiques. Christine Sylvester argues that traditional IR scholarship has marginalized women’s experiences and reinforced masculine narratives of power, war, and statehood. Through a feminist lens, the book reexamines core IR concepts such as sovereignty, security, and global politics, while highlighting the significance of everyday lives, personal narratives, and embodied experiences. Drawing on postmodern approaches, Sylvester destabilizes universalist assumptions and opens space for plural, situated, and contested understandings of global relations. This work represents a foundational contribution to feminist IR theory, offering both a critique of disciplinary orthodoxy and a transformative vision for a more inclusive and reflexive international politics.
