Violence Against Women Based on Cultural Practices : Why A Study is Required?
Culture accommodates knowledge and rules, or values used by its community, to determine an action. In culture, norms, whether it’s good or bad, are formed: when an individual in a speci!ic traditional community was considered to be violating the norms within a culture, then the violator will be given a stigma or sanctions as social punishment and ‘traditional’ or ‘Adat’ settlement mechanism. Whereas, when an individual abides to the norms or existing values, they will receive awards or appreciations from the community. Sanctions and awards in a culture will function according to a developed mechanism within a certain cultural community, Regardless whether the values or norms are in line or against the international Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) or applicable laws—in this case, law within The Republic of Indonesia/Negara Kesatuan Repulik Indonesia (NKRI)
