Freedom from violence: women's strategies from around the world

United Nations Development Fund for Women - Organizational Body; Schuler, Margaret - Personal Name;

The book is directed primarily to women activists and advocates who are engaged in the daily struggle to overcome violence against women through services programs, education and public awareness campaigns, law reform activities or other strategies. The purpose of this collection of articles from Asia, Africa, north and South America is to offer an overview of issues and strategies related specifically to gender violence. It is directed primarily to women activists and advocates who are committed to eradicating violence against women in all its forms. Gender violence is a pervasive and prevalent problem worldwide, touching all aspects of women's lives—from the home to the work place to the street. Although expressions of abuse may vary from culture to culture, gender violence carries a common thread across ethnic, racial and class frontiers: women are vulnerable because they are women.
Freedom from Violence: Women's Strategies From Around the World tells the stories of women organizing to combat gender violence in Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Thailand, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Mexico, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and the United States. From a cross-cultural perspective, Freedom from Violence shares their sources of inspiration and common threads of agreement about what needs to be done to confront the violence in women's lives in all its aspects: physical, social, economic, cultural and legal. Rooted in the vision and work of women across the globe, the book is an inspiration and a resource for anyone engaged in the struggle to end violence against women.
