Working with rape survivors: a handbook
This is a handbook of basic principles and guidelines for working with women in crisis following rape. While it's focus is on women who have survived rape, it is also relevant for work with other groups of survivors such as children and men and other types of sexual assault. A lot of people do not know the facts about sexual assault. Responsibility for the offender’s actions lies with the offender, never with the survivor of the crime. When people wrongfully blame survivors of sexual assault for what happened, this can lead to feelings of self-blame, shame and guilt. It is important for everyone, especially survivors, to be aware of the facts about sexual assault, so they can challenge popularly believed rape ‘myths’. Rape myths wrongfully let offenders off the hook for their actions, by placing the blame for the sexual assault on the survivor instead.
