This is a history of Muslim personal law in Sri Lanka from colonial times to the present. The Position of Muslim Women under their personal Law in Sri Lanka in many ways represents an effort to improve their legal status and give them a proper place in the family and community. It is important that their historical and social tradition should be strengthened and developed for them to remove constaints that do not acord with the tenets and spirit of Islam.
