Resurgent patriarchies: challenges for women's movements in Asia
acknowledgement that men and women are different, that the needs and outlooks of men and women are different, that men tend to have more physical, economic, and social power, and that the basis of society is courtesy. The Patriarchy does not view women as hothouse flowers! They are capable of great moral and physical courage, astonishing feats of will, a determination and perseverance that is wondrous to behold, and a sharpness of mind and agility of intellect that is baffling to those who underestimate them. Women are expected to be the ‘generals of the home’ and to be capable of managing a household – including its budget, provisioning, staff (including hiring and firing), dealing with vendors and tradesmen, education of children, caring for the sick, and the maintenance of her crafts and hobbies. In short, they are all expected to be entrepreneurs.
