Muslim women and access to justice: historical, legal and social experience in Malaysia
The general purpose of this research was to investigate the historical, legal, and socio-cultural aspects of Mulim women's status in Malaysia. Especially examined the development of syariah laws in the country, analysed the substantive aspects of the law in relation to women's rights, looked at how actual legal cases brought about by women were handled in sveral syariah courts and observed the process of islamic counselling that women had to go through when they sought redress through the courts. This book comprises a collection of writings emanating from a research project entitled Muslim Women and Law. The purpose of the research project was to investigate the historical, legal and socio-cultural aspects of Muslim women's status in Malaysia. The papers in this volume examine the development of Syariah laws in Malaysia, analyses the substantive aspects of the law in relation to women's rights, looks at how legal cases brought about by women were handled in several Syariah Courts and probes deeper into the process of Islamic counselling that women had to go through when they sought redress through the courts.
