Taking steps of courage: teaching adolescents about sexuality and gender in Nigeria and Cameroun

This report describes gender-sensitive approaches to sexuality education and provides selected program examples based on the work of IWHC’s partners in Nigeria and Cameroon. The first section briefly describes the changing context of adolescence in the two countries. The second discusses what is meant by sexuality and sexuality education as well as some basic guidelines for teaching this topic. The final section outlines issues to consider when developing programs in specific contexts. Since 1990, IWHC has supported colleagues in Nigeria and Cameroon who are working with young people on sexual and reproductive health and gender equality. In 1990, the recently established Action Health Incorporated (AHI) of Nigeria asked IWHC to support its efforts to reduce the incidence of teenage pregnancy. Since that time many other individuals and organizations have become interested in their work. This report, written in 2000 by Andrea Irvin, looks at the shared experiences of AHI and other IWHC partners: in Nigeria, Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI), the Conscientizing Nigerian Male Adolescents (CMA) program, the Empowerment and Action Research Center (EMPARC), the Adolescent Health and Information Project (AHIP); and in Cameroon, Femmes, Santé et Développement, among others.
