This review emanates from concerns regarding the potential for increasing vulnerability of Asian populations, arising from regional and international financial crises, globalization, environmental degradation and the aging populations. It reviews concepts of social safety nets and social protection within the region, the status of current provisions, dimensions of social exclusion, and the nature of current debates and action.
