Adolescence: continuity, change, and diversity
What characterizes early adolescent's cognitive functioning is far different than the level and nature of a late adolescent's thinking. The sexual orientation of an early adolescent characterized by same sex friendships and peer affiliation ultimately gives way to a greater interest in intimacy and friendship based on one's own interets and emotional needs.
