Human rights and the environment: conclusions of ameeting of experts, january 2002
In its decision 2001/111, the Commission on Human Rights invited the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to consider the organization of a joint seminar to review and assess progress achieved since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in promoting and protecting human rights in relation to environmental questions and in the framework of Agenda 21. In adopting the decision 2001/111, the Commission noted the forthcoming World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg, South Africa. 2. Pursuant to this decision, the High Commissioner and the Executive Director convened a Joint Seminar to review and assess progress achieved since UNCED in promoting and protecting human rights in relation to environmental questions. The Seminar was held in Geneva on 16 January 2002 in collaboration with the concerned international institutions and agencies and taking into account the views of concerned States. Funding for the Seminar was provided by a voluntary contribution of the Government of the Swiss Confederation.
