Sustainable Development Agenda & Young People: Recognising Voices and Claiming Rights
The ARROW Briefs publication published by The Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Center for Women (ARROW) in 2018 highlights the position and role of young people in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda in the Asia-Pacific region. With a cover photo of a smiling girl while rowing a boat, this document visually emphasizes the resilience and right of young people to determine the direction of their lives. Prepared based on the results of the 2017 Youth Preparation Forum ahead of the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD), this publication criticizes the lack of meaningful involvement of young people in planning, implementing and monitoring SDGs, even though they are most affected by issues of poverty, gender inequality, climate change, sexual and reproductive health, education and decent work. Its contents summarize the demands of young people for the state to ensure the right to voice, access to information, youth-friendly health services, comprehensive education, and protection from child marriage and gender-based violence as prerequisites for achieving the SDGs. This document also offers recommendations for governments, UN agencies, and civil society organizations to build inclusive participation mechanisms, age and gender disaggregated data, and financing that is responsive to the needs of young people. Aimed at policy makers, development planners, youth organizations, and women's and children's rights activists, this brief is an important reference so that the principle of "leaving no one behind" in the SDGs truly includes the voices and rights of young people as development subjects, not just beneficiaries.
