Adolescent in Contemporary Indonesia
This book by Lyn Parker and Pam Nilan, published by Routledge, is a comprehensive ethnographic study of the lives of post-Reformasi Indonesian teenagers amidst the tensions between modernity, tradition, and religion. With cover photos of teenage boys and girls in public spaces, the book emphasizes that teenagers are not merely objects of policy, but social actors actively negotiating their identities. Based on in-depth field research in various cities, the authors examine how teenagers interpret education, work, sexuality, social media, consumerism, gender relations, and even nationalism and Islam. The book dismantles the stereotype of “juvenile delinquency” by demonstrating their vulnerability and agency in the face of economic pressures, family expectations, public morality, and state policy. Issues such as dating, motorcycle gangs, early marriage, educated unemployment, and middle-class aspirations are discussed through the voices of teenagers themselves, not just from an adult perspective. Aimed at academics, policymakers, educators, and youth activists, Adolescents in Contemporary Indonesia is an important reference for understanding the complexities of Indonesian teenagers and designing youth policies that are more contextual, inclusive, and based on their realities.
