Point of Contact: Working with Children and Families - Book 8
As Book 8 of the Point of Contact training resource series developed under an Australian Government Initiative, this document provides practice guidance for engaging and intervening with children and families where family and domestic violence is present. It builds on the conceptual and legal foundations of earlier books by focusing on the “how” of frontline practice: establishing safe and trusting relationships with children and non-offending parents, communicating with children in age-appropriate and trauma-informed ways, and undertaking assessments that centre children’s safety and experiences. The resource outlines strategies for working with the non-offending parent to strengthen protective capacity and the parent-child relationship, while ensuring that accountability remains with the perpetrator. It covers planning and case management, including safety planning with children, coordinating multi-agency responses, and managing risk when perpetrators remain in the family system. The book emphasizes reflective practice, cultural safety, and avoiding collusion or mother-blaming, and includes practice tools, case examples, and prompts for supervision. Intended for child protection practitioners, family support workers, educators, health professionals, police, and other frontline staff, this training resource functions as an operational guide to deliver child-centred, safety-focused, and collaborative interventions with families affected by family and domestic violence across Australia.
