Point of Contact: The Impact of Family and Children Domestic Violence on Children - Book 6
As Book 6 of the Point of Contact training resource series developed under an Australian Government Initiative, this document details the specific and wide-ranging impacts of family and domestic violence on children’s health, development, and wellbeing. It outlines how exposure to violence affects children across different developmental stages, from infancy through adolescence, and across multiple domains: physical safety and health, brain development, emotional regulation, cognitive functioning, behavior, education, and social relationships. The resource explains trauma responses in children, including hypervigilance, anxiety, depression, aggression, and difficulties with attachment and trust, and emphasizes that impacts occur whether children directly experience abuse or live in a household where violence is perpetrated against a parent. It also addresses the compounding effects of co-occurring issues such as poverty, housing instability, and parental substance use, while reinforcing that children’s responses are diverse and influenced by protective factors. Designed as a training module, it includes indicators for practitioners to recognize, practice guidance for responding, and case examples to link theory to frontline work. Intended for child protection workers, educators, health professionals, police, and community service providers, this book equips practitioners with the evidence base needed to identify, assess, and respond to the impacts of family and domestic violence on children in trauma-informed and developmentally appropriate ways.
