Regional Summit On Foreign Migrant Domestic Workers (August 26 To 28, 2002)
This publication documents the discussions and outcomes of the Regional Summit on Foreign Migrant Domestic Workers held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from 26–28 August 2002. The summit brought together representatives from governments, migrant worker organizations, trade unions, NGOs, and international institutions from more than twenty countries to discuss the conditions and rights of migrant domestic workers. Participants examined major issues affecting migrant domestic workers, including exploitation, discrimination, limited legal protection, and vulnerability to abuse in destination countries. One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the Colombo Declaration, which emphasized the need to recognize migrant domestic workers as workers with rights and called for stronger policies, legal protections, and regional cooperation to ensure their dignity, safety, and access to justice.
