Swept Under the Rug: Abuses Against Domestic Workers Around the World
This book documents widespread abuses experienced by domestic workers in many parts of the world, highlighting how their work in private households often leaves them invisible and insufficiently protected by labor laws. Drawing on global case studies and testimonies, the report reveals patterns of exploitation such as excessive working hours, unpaid wages, physical and psychological abuse, restrictions on movement, and confiscation of identity documents. It also analyzes structural factors—including gender inequality, migration policies, and weak labor protections—that contribute to these violations, while calling for stronger legal safeguards, recognition of domestic work as formal labor, and improved enforcement to protect workers’ rights and dignity.
