Making Money off Migrants: the Indonesian Exodus to Malaysia
This book analyzes the large-scale migration of Indonesian workers to Malaysia and examines how various actors benefit economically from the migration process. It explores the roles of recruitment agencies, brokers, employers, and state institutions in shaping labor migration systems that often place migrants in vulnerable positions. Through policy analysis and case studies, the book highlights issues such as recruitment fees, debt dependency, undocumented migration, and labor exploitation. Overall, the study provides a critical perspective on how labor migration becomes a profitable industry while many migrant workers from Indonesia continue to face significant social, legal, and economic risks.
