Booklet 1 Introduction: Why The Focus On Women International Migrant Workers
This booklet explains the rationale for focusing specifically on women international migrant workers within the broader context of global labor migration. It highlights how gender shapes migration experiences, exposing women to distinct vulnerabilities such as exploitation in domestic and care work, gender-based violence, contract substitution, and limited legal protection. At the same time, it underscores women’s significant economic and social contributions through remittances, household support, and transnational care networks. The booklet argues that a gender-sensitive and rights-based approach is essential for developing policies and programs that effectively protect women migrant workers and recognize their agency, resilience, and role in sustainable development.
