Women, Violent Conflict and Peacebuilding: Global Perspectives
We know only too well that along with children and the elderly, women are the primary victims of conflicts today. But too often this perception of women as victims during violent conflict and war obscures their role as peace makers in reconstruction and peace building processes. Around the globe and against all odds, women and women's organisations have initiated dialogue and reconciliation in their villages and communities. From Northern Ireland to Burundi, from the Middle East to Colombia and Kosovo, women are succeeding in constructing a new vision of peace and security that puts human concerns at its centre. Women's activities, be it accessing water and seeds for food production, creating peace zones to allow their children safe passage to school, promoting peace agreements that include the provision of justice and basic needs, are a powerful force for peace in the most divided communities
