The Problem of datum selection for survey and mapping

This article tries in short to outline the siginificance of datum slection for survey and mapping which is not only applicable to land survey and mapping but also to the same activities at sea. The latter activities are increasing in the last decade due to (1) the great and rapdly increasing need for improved accuracy in measurement at sea and, (2) the state of the art that has been advanced to a point where co-ordinated and well planed national and international programs aimed at meeting requirements world provide valuable, aprticable, scientific and economic results.
