Silence For The Sake of Harmony: Domestic violence and health in Central Java, Indonesia

Mohammad Hakimi, et.al - Personal Name;

This research publication presents findings from a collaborative study on domestic violence and its health impacts on women in Central Java, Indonesia. Authored by Mohammad Hakimi, Elli Nur Hayati, V. Utari Marlinawati, Anna Winkvist, and Mary C. Ellsberg, the book is a joint project of CHN-RL GMU Yogyakarta, Rifka Annisa Women’s Crisis Center Yogyakarta, Umeå University Sweden, and the Women’s Health Exchange & Program for Appropriate Technology in Health USA. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, the study documents the prevalence, forms, and determinants of intimate partner violence among women in rural and urban areas of Central Java, and examines its consequences for physical, reproductive, and mental health. A central theme is how cultural norms valuing “harmony” and family unity contribute to women’s silence, normalizing violence and creating barriers to disclosure and help-seeking. The research highlights the links between violence and poor health outcomes including injury, chronic pain, depression, suicidal ideation, and adverse pregnancy outcomes, while also identifying protective factors and community responses. The book concludes with evidence-based recommendations for health sector responses, legal reform, and community-based prevention strategies. Intended for researchers, policymakers, health practitioners, women’s rights advocates, and students, this publication provides one of the earliest comprehensive empirical accounts of domestic violence in Indonesia and remains a key reference for understanding the intersection of gender, culture, and health in the Indonesian context.
